I met w/one of the top neuros on this topic-dr. page pennell. She does a lot with hormones and how they also affect your seizures...i could stay on my current AED'S and progesterone and be fine. As far as I know depakote is the only one that is unsafe to take while pregnant. Almost all though pass through breastmilk.
Hope that helps!

>Hi Tammy,
>Thanks for the advice. I've talked with my obgyn and neurologist. The ob wants me off AEDs before the pregnancy, but then the neurologist says I won't be able to drive. If I can't drive, I can't go to work, then I won't have health insurance, then I really shouldn't be trying to get pregnant. Its a domino effect. I think it depends on the AED whether or not you can get pregnant safely. But its one of those things, just because some women had healthy babies doesn't mean its safe- just like everything else you're supposed to avoid while pregnant :-)
>Still, its unfair that the government is ending the adoption tax credit. These are children, all around the world and here in the states that need families- they already exist. Adoption can cost more than $30,000- who can afford that? Meanwhile we bail out banks and spend billions on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Would be nice if the government could help out the little guy, once in a while.

>> Kate, why do you think you can't get pregnant? I can tell you that many women on AEDs have normal pregnancies and births, and normal babies. If you are thinking that being on an AED (or two) rules out having a baby, I would encourage you to look into it a little further. Talk with your neurologist, and I think there may also be some information on some epilepsy sites.
