Terry,
Each company decides what amount of hours is considered qualified for health insurance. So even if people are p/t, some places will cover them (like my employer--18 hrs is the minimum).
If you do not qualify for Medicaid, and you can't do your state's Medicaid spend down, see if your state has Free Care--usually they are accepted at all of the big hospitals. Or try community health centers.
The other option is www.healthcare.gov . It will let you put in your state, and I believe will screen you, or show you the options available for you. Until the states set up Exchanges in 2014, there isn't a lot. Your state may have a PCIP plan though--that bans insurance from denying you coverage due to a pre-existing condition.

Subject: [epilepsy] Can't get insurance at Macy's
I work for Macy's and it was ok as a part time (on call) job to fill in. I worked two social service positions part time also, but lost them due to the economy. I have not been able to find
another job and have no health insurance since my COBRA expired. Every time a better position becomes available in my department I have applied for it. The store manager doesn't like me and even though I am more qualified and in good standing at the store, they called, interviewed and hired an ex employee with almost no experience in my department. I found out yesterday after she walked up to us and announced that she was the new full time person. I had reported
a person to HR because she was stealing my sales (right in front of my face!). The store manager likes her, so nothing happened. My boss, who was always there for me was just laid off a couple of weeks ago, so I knew things would get worse.
My question is, since I have worked in this department for almost ten years and have life threatening health problems, what can I do about this? Macy's is always advertising that they give to charity, but they won't even help their own employee. Thanks for any suggestions!
Terry
