One version of intermittent fasting, that I did in the past, was called "The Warrior Diet". Basically the plan is the same, except during the day, you eat raw vegies and fruits. It worked very well for me, and for everyone else that did it. However, after awhile people stopped eating during the day, so I ended up doing Fast-5, before I read the book.
I say this because it seems that the raw vegies didn't actually hurt the fast any. So I think they are a good stopgap, esp. when eating out. If you are with one of these groups that just eats constantly ... order salads, with vinegar (not creamy dressing: THAT has loads of calories, as does cheese). In most groups I've been in, salads for lunch are quite normal, esp. for women, and the "raw foodists", "vegans" and other dietary-experimental people. Some light meat on the salad (like cooked shrimp or crab) isn't going to affect your insulin levels much either.
As for going out to lunch at work: back when I worked at a place like that, it costs me a lot of money to eat out! It was good socializing, but it was a major monthly expense. I guess what I'd do these days is take an hour off, listen to a good book on tape, and do some craft project I never have time for. And save the money up for something I really want.

"Going out to eat" was a big cause of the weight I gained while working there, by the way. Meals you get when you eat out are usually loaded with way more calories than home-cooked meals, and often the ingredients aren't great. Like, one of the things I got when I ate out was fish and fries ... they are fried generally in hydrogenated fat (trans fats), but how can you turn them down when you are sitting smelling them, and everyone else is eating them? And pasta with cream sauce. And nice big milkshakes (dunno what they make them with nowadays, but it comes in a bag and has a large list of ingredients).
We don't eat out much now, partly because the meals we make at home taste better, using better and fresher ingredients. When we DO eat out, we go someplace really nice, and enjoy it. It took me a long time to get used to preparing meals without spending all day at it, but it's been worth it. Esp. for the kids: they don't have the health issues that their peers have. They have nice clear skin, no weight issues, straight teeth. My husband is in way better health than the rest of his family too ... no weight problems, normal blood pressure and blood sugar, good cholesterol, etc. They don't "do Fast-5" but they are used to one main meal a day that is just a really GOOD meal.

Hello all,
I am new to the group and have been trying fast 5 off and on but running into some struggles. Wondering what you all do when you go out of town for the weekend with a spouse or other and they want to eat all the meals and have you go with them. Do you go with and just drink water or what? Also, what do you do at work when everyone goes to lunch?
These have been my biggest struggles and cause me to fall off the plan but I am trying to start today and have no more slips. Other than these times I love the plan and have no real troubles. So, thanks for any advice and help.
