Re: [epilepsy] Getting your Memory Back

Susan,

The only thing that really works is practice. You have to relearn how
to learn. Your brain is wired to learn in a certain way, and that is
based on a combination of genetics, environment, and the use of it. You
have to find new ways to learn, and more ways to expose yourself to the
new information.

For example, you may naturally be a visual learning, meaning once you
see something you remember it. Now you have to retrain yourself to use
auditory and tactile memory as well. The best way to train you brain to
learn differently is to do things that make you think in different
ways. Do puzzles, do math, play memory games or even board games. Play
games that force you to remember what was just said or what just
happened. After my surgery I got a few apps for my phone that I used.
Simon, same as the game, was a good one because it makes you remember a
sequence. I also found memory apps that I know were good for me to do.

Unfortunately this is really the only thing that works except getting
off meds. Once I went off Topomax it was amazing! Though this is still
an issue it is not nearly as profound as it was. I actually got back a
lot of the IQ I had lost from before I was sick to after surgery.
