RE: [epilepsy] my medication

Hi Robert

This is interesting as I have to break my tegretol especially the 200 mg tablets as I only need to take 1100 mg a day, the doctor gave me 1200 but I find that too much, it makes me feel ill. The 1100 is sufficient along with my ceppra. You evidently get the same boxes as I get here in France, I just wish they would put in braille the dosage on the box along with the name, they are pretty good here though as most drugs do have braille on them.

Regards

Adrien

Hi Adrian,

Here in the UK we sometimes get product intended for other EU countries (parallel imports then relabelled for UK) and yes in almost square boxes of 30, as opposed to the made for UK Tegretol Prolonged Release long boxes of 56. I remember getting told that Tegretol Retard (as it was then called) could be split as the drug was dispersed within the matrix of the tablet. Whereas if you look at information for Tegretol XR (for North American markets) is says don't break at the split line as this affects the rate at which the drug is released.

Hi Robert

Firstly, I am not in the us, I am in France, the medication is the same here as in the uk, the long tablet with the split and the slightly shorter one for the 200 mg, I stopped taking the little round ones a long time ago when they swapped me to the new tegretol. The packaging may be different too, a square box, I used to get it in the uk but it was a long box. Ok about vitamin b12.

I think maybe Tegretol versions in the US are different in appearance from those here in the UK. The US Tegretol XR (for extended release) is called Tegretol Prolonged Release here in the UK and are a tan coloured smooth lozenge shape with a split line. Ordinary Tegretol here are a small round plain white tablet with a single split line on the flat face.

My understanding of vitamin B12 is first you only need supplementation if you have a problem with your digestive system not absorbing it from foods such as red meat. People with Crohns disease or other bowel conditions such as having had a section of bowel removed because of cancer or Crohns or ulcerative colitis. In these cases foods pass more quickly through and nutrients from food does not get absorbed by the gut. I have taken AEDs for nearly 40 years and my B12 is fine, though folates is very near the minimum.

Hi

I am not sure if I am on the xr or just the normal tegretol slow release, what does vitamin b12 do?
