Hi Amy,
Don't feel bad, I can't remember much from when I had my grand mal (i guess) either. I have complex partials...I've conked out one other time--on the Boston public transportation system on the way home from work. Yay. I've had seizures "officially" since age 16, but we think they started around age 7 (on and off). I've been on a cocktail of meds since then (I'm 34 now).
My appointment last week ended with me upping one medication, and then trying the South Beach diet. The modified Atkins is another you can do (there's another Amy here who can tell you about that!), but I have a family history of heart issues, and I don't want to add to that. I don't cook, so we'll see how long this lasts!!
I was going to do the VNS a few years back, but do some scheduling problems by the hospital, I became frustrated and cancelled it. Right now I'm on Zonegran and Trileptal. We'll see what happens though!!
Sorry about your head!!
elizabeth

Subject: [epilepsy] New here
Hi everyone. I am Amy, from Florida. I have had epilepsy for 22 years. Recently I had been seizure free (well, grand mal free) for 3 years. Right after Easter, I suffered a grand mal seizure in my kitchen. It caused me to fall, hitting my head on the tile floor. I suffered a traumatic brain injury. I fractured my skull and had 3 areas of bleeding on my brain and frontal lobe swelling. I had two additional seizures right after that. I had never had more than one in a day before. I spent a few days in critical condition, then was moved to a regular room. I then went on to a nursing home for rehabilitation for 8 days. I am home now with a home health nurse and physical therapist. I am still having massive headaches and get dizzy quite often. I also developed a tooth ache after the fall, but it was just a come and go thing, until today and it is awful. It feels like my teeth are going to pop out of my head. Has anyone ever had that happen after a seizure? Right now, I am taking 3000 mg of Keppra a day and 400 mg of Dilantin at night. I have 3 children already and not planning anymore. I was on Tegretol while I was pregnant, but it stopped working for me. I have been on many anti-seizure meds over the years and have always ended up having break through seizures. I believe my doctor is considering the VNS. My memory is so fuzzy in the days surrounding my injury and I hate that feeling. My nurse is recommending the ketogenic diet, but not really as strict as going in the hospital to begin it and such. So I suppose it would be a modified one. Is anyone using that to control their seizures? Anyway, sorry to talk to much. I hope to get to know you all soon.
Amy
