It's designed to be a permanent lifestyle. Actually once you
get used to it it's hard NOT to do it, and you tend to feel
bad when you go off it. In terms of reality, I'm guessing
from posts here that most people do go off it sometimes
for social reasons, but a party here and there doesn't
"mess things up" in the long run. My own strategy for
social events is to order salads, which are easy on
the blood sugar anyway (and gluten-free, which is something
that is hard to get when eating out).

There isn't much research yet with humans, but with animals
the main side effect of IF being a "lifestyle" is that they live
longer and are healthier. Weight stabilizes at some
level (with mice, some lose weight and some don't,
but they don't get "starving skinny"). This is all covered nicely
in the book
