Hi Doris,
I talked with my doctor about possibly switching to generic a while ago for cost reasons and we went over this exact question. He said that if I did go to generic I should put myself on "seizure watch" for about two weeks, so no driving or other things that could kill you if you had one. But he said if you're seizure free after that point then the generic you're on should be fine for you.
As a side note, with there being so many different generic options for Lamictal, once you find that one does work for you, have your doctor write a prescription that says you have to take that brand of generic only. Pharmacies are constantly trying to get the cheapest prices for generics, so they may have generic A for 3 months then go to generic D later. And with the FDA only requiring generics to be within 20% of the potency of the brand name one generic may be only 85% of the potency while another maybe 120%. See the complications?
I hope this was helpful!
