[Prince-4ever] Re: [Paisley_Palace] thestar.com: Three discs not a charm for Prince

Lotus Flower & Minneapolis Sound are the work

very Prince sounding music, cohesive and I'm enjoying it
I don't have to skip around to find Prince on these cds

I think Elixer or Bria V could work but not the 2 together

I think the way she was handled (or not handled) didn't help promote her as a protege

I question if anyone would have bought Elixer if it was sold seperately
I do like a few songs on there, but I don't think her presense or her place in the Purple World, has made a statement.

The music from Elixer is good, but we keep going back to Prince

I can look back at the Time, What Time Is It? Ice Cream Castles
Glamorous Life Romance 1600 Sheila E
Vanity 6 (not really Apollonia 6)
the Family
Mazarati
Jill Jones

and really listen to the album for what it is as well as who the protege(singer/band) is

I think if he brought Bria to us like Jill Jones before she released her album
We heard J.J. on 1999 (was she on Controversy) we heard her on the Time, Purple Rain, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, b-Sides, Mazarati Sheila E & the Family

We saw her in lingere a purple trench a cop hait with the platinum blond during the 1999 tour and videos, we saw her in Purple Rain as the sensitive bartender/hostess, she was Prince's friend outside of the music,  And we knew she could sing and she had character
So when the album dropped Jill was already immersed in our minds and lp's as a Purple singer.  She also took part in the writing of songs and direction of the album

I think if Bria had a little of that, I would be more excited to get her album.

(I don't know when Prince met this native from Minneapolis (that's a plus)) but I think he knew her long enough to have her sing back up at some of the after parties, 21 Night's Book party and definately on Jay Leno(unless there was some serious reason she couldn't)

He should have had photoshoots for her and let her image be found online easily
She could have jumped on stage with Sheila, in some lace ruffled purple shirt or paisley, and sang impromptu (or made it seem that way) back up for Sheila while Prince was somewhere in the room

It would have made her interesting

No matter what anyone says about Vanity, she had sass she had character she had sexiness and it all matched Prince and it was real  the album was fun it was playfull it was her extension in Princes world.  And it was raw.  I think she was a good frontman, she sang back up at times for Prince she and the girls 6 were mingled with the Time, Vanity is heard on Grace and other songs...

I think that is the road 2 go for protege such as Bria especially since she is one person like Jill Jones.

I am giving her a chance though, If I can finally get 2 Lotus Flow3r cause I'm still jamming Minneapolis Sound then I'll get 2 Elixer

What I'll probably do to get into it is compose a playlist of songs from the 3 albums along with other Prince & Protege music from 1978 and onward that blends and feels like music from the 2009 3cd set, It always helps me get into music more

Space from Come has that Minneapolis Sound with that urban night life early 90's sound

(by the way, I think Jill should have had an album somewhere around the Purple Rain -ATWIAD time as well as pre-or during the Parade album

POP & JAZZ CRITIC
Prince LotusFlow3r (out of 4)
MPLSound
Bria Valente Elixer

ATLANTA – Unsure of the rabidity of Prince fandom in artsy Little Five Points where I'm staying, I hustled out to the district's Target just after 9 a.m. yesterday to nab The Purple One's latest offering.
I could have slept in.
There were rows and rows of the three-disc LotusFlo3r set (LotusFlow3r, MPLSound and Bria Valente's Elixer) priced at a recession-friendly $11.98, but few early morning takers.
I skulked around the music department like a store detective and observed a couple of people who examined the triptych – available only at this retailer, or on the musician's website with a $77 (U.S.) subscription – but left it behind.
"I want to read the reviews first, then I'll come back and get it," explained one 40ish gent who stopped by twice before deferring his purchase.
I wouldn't count on his return; there's some good music here, but not three albums worth.
Of the three, I most enjoyed LotusFlow3r, which opens with "From the Lotus..." a psychedelic jazz-rock instrumental reminiscent of Weather Report and Jimi Hendrix. It showcases the Minneapolis native's versatility, with political blues ("Colonized Mind''), Brazilian rhythms ("Love Like Jazz"), folky accents ("77 Beverly Park") and a funky James Brown homage ("Feel Good, Feel Better, Feel Wonderful") that will have you dancing around the living room.
The second record, MPLSound, the title an abbreviation of his hometown, is rife with funk-filled jams that recall the master musician's early career with echoing drums, synthesized vocals, heavy breathing and the swagger of "(There'll Never B) Another Like Me" and "I got a box of chocolates that'll rock the socks of any girl that comes my way" ("Chocolate Box").
The memorable songs reference Prince's 50-year-old, seen-it-all, done-it-all maturity: "Tell your mama she should give me a call/When she get tired of running after you down the hall," he instructs in "Valentina"; "Better With Time" is a naked, piano-driven ballad celebrating long-term monogamy.
Though his virtuosity is never in question, this fare lacks the focus, emotional imperative or movie protagonists that fuelled Prince's best work like "Purple Rain" or "Sometimes It Snows in April."
That malaise is best characterized by the presentation of his latest hot protégé Bria Valente, whose debut, Elixer, completes this set. Why promote this tastefully slinky, but non-descript, R&B singer?
It's not a significant addition to Prince's remarkable catalogue, but there are a few tracks that will fit neatly into his live show.
