Re: [epilepsy] Re:Long-Term Side Effects of Dilantin

Sue,

I've been on Dilantin and Phenabarb for over 20 years and haven't had a sz for 3 years and
before that it was 4 years.

My Dr. and I talked about the length of time last time I was in 6 months ago. He thinks if there
is not a problem-- stay with what you have. He would also change me to something else
if I want to-- but then I would have to get used to another med. And at 78 I'm glad to stay with
what I have.

The only problem I have is swollen gums. I see the hygienist every 3 or 4 months, brush my teeth twice a day and use floss or stimulants everyday. That keeps the swelling down.

My dr says that he's concerned about the long term effects of dilantin. I'm happy with dilantin, have had no major side effects. What have others experienced with long term dilantin use, and how has changing meds been? Thanks for any help.

I wonder if vitamins like sublingual B12's and calcium from milk can counteract some of those side effects.

I have met a 94 year old who was on Dilantin ever since an injury in WW II. He was very healthy and died when after walking to the store, he stepped out on the street and was hit by a car.
