Re: [epilepsy] Headache Post Seizure

I have...Keppra!! :) Snce I started it in July, except for a dumb mistake when I had the flu in December, there hasn't been a HINT of a sz since!! No more 25-40 SPs in 18-24 hours with every damn season change!!!!! I honestly can't believe it! I never thought I'd know what that was like. :) Too bad it took nearly 43 years...

I can't take much--I'm on 250 mg now--and I have other health issues, but not having to worry about that makes life SO much easier! :)

I'm glad I didn't.  I really hate causing bad feelings.  I hope someday you can find something else that works for you.  That is horrible to have to do something that causes that kind fear to be able to feel better.

Hey, Christine. :)

No offense taken. :) I just thought you didn't understand that, although I'm scared to death of it, too, it's the ONLY thing that has helped me. I remember thinking "I CAN'T do THAT!! There HAS to be another way..." but there never was, so I just learned to coax myself through it, remind myself that it was NOT shunt failure, and that I would feel better once I did...and I always have. :)

I didn't mean any offense and I got the impression from your post that nothing else did work for you not that it was one of the first things you tried. I was just trying passing along what worked for me.

I have a severe phobia of vommiting for a similar reason, a past medical condition. I used to have an ulcer and would throw up blood.  The sight of blood can trigger my seizures. The headachs and muscle pain are worse to me than the thought of possibly triggering another seizure. It's why I said "unless nothing else worked for me"  The headaches are so bad that if nothing else worked I would try it.  Sorry I really should have been more clear about that.  I am not the best communicator when it comes to writing but I am trying to improve.

Christine.

My point is that nothing else does work for me to kill the headache. Believe me, I have had a vomiting phobia my whole life because of my underlying condition, hydrocephalus. Vomiting is a classic sign of shunt failure, especially with severe headache, and every time I had a post-ictal headache, poor Mom was utterly terrified that I was in shunt failure. I know now that I'm not (and have known for about 25 years) when this happens, because I recover quickly. If I were in shunt failure, I would decline very quickly after that. If a pain med worked on my headache, or if I could sleep it off, I would definitely do that, but it's never worked for me. This is the only way to make it--and the szs--stop.

I hate throwing up so I don't think I would personally will try that one unless nothing else worked for me.  Thankfully I haven't had a seizure since January but I do frequently get migranes and horrible muscle pain post seizure.

For me the only thing that really seemed to help is sleep.  If I can take even a short nap it would get rid of the headache.  I know my doctor said dehydration can cause or worsen headaches but I don't think that was my problem.  I drink plenty of water.

Well, thank God it's been awhile, but my szs are generally from illness or air pressure change, and no pain med helps me. As bad as this sounds, the only thing that seems to help is throwing up. Once I do, I start to feel better fairly quickly. It may not be what you wanted to hear, LOL, but it works for me. I have even been known to shock my system with ice cold water to make it happen, and it moves the process along quickly.
