Subject: [epilepsy] question about jury duty

HI,
My son got a questionaire about jury duty. It was strange because we have
lived in 3 different states and recieved all kinds of jury summons but this
was the first questionaire of this sort. Looking it over, he would be
exempt because he is student and also because of his disability. He has
Asperger's but his seizures are uncontrolled complex partials and abscence
seizures. He could miss testimony and not realize it which wouldn't be
fair to either side. But according to the instructions on the letter, he
would need a letter from his doctor ( oh and they state they don't keep
letters so if you are called again, new letter needed). His neuro takes
forever to get a letter processed. She is prompt but her transcription
service is slow. Fortunately, we went and did the online process and he was
exempt with student so we didn't have to go through that.
My question is this- I asked some friends with special needs kids and one
mom said to get the letter from any doctor. She said they would have forms
about this. I have worked in doctors' offices in the past and many would
have refused to write a letter saying he was unqualified to say my son
wasn't able to be on a jury since it was out of their field of medicine (
say family doctor isn't a neuro). I did think that when I worked for doctors
many were very leery of giving anything on their letterhead for something
they were not legally qualified to diagnose. I saw it happen many times.
People would come in to one kind of doctor with some form from the state and
need a letter. The doctor would refuse because it wasn't his area. I saw
it at several offices I worked at, the doctors didn't want to get involved.
Their license limit what they are qualified to give a medical opinion on.
It is like I have a license in audiology and my undergrad was communication
disorders ( speech path and aud) but I can't dx language or speech stuff,
only hearing so I couldn't write a letter on a patient's speech and language
abilities even though I would KNOW it ( did evals and therapy in undergrad),
I can suggest it but not say I know it. Also I just went to the state
conference and Texas has just passed a law in my field and several others
that has stressed ethics. Within my 10 continuing ed credits I have to get
every year, 2 must be on ethics. This would be exactly part of it. My
class took it even farther than this. They stressed that even if you are
licensed but hadn't been active in that area of your field, ethically you
shouldn't work with that patient until you upgraded your knowledge and
skill. Yeah, it was that picky. They can have a report from another doctor
saying Matt has seizures but they didn't dx it. Now I could be over
thinking it and many doctors might not mind, it depends on how they view the
state license. She said they aren't asking for a dx, just if he was
qualified. But the doctors would make the decision based on the dx.

So I am sure now that my son is an adult, this kind of stuff is going to
come up more often. He does have SSI disability but they still got his name
( probably from his state ID). So has it been your experience that a family
doctor would sign off on this, are there forms most doctors have for this?
