Re: [epilepsy] Seizure first aid video on YouTube

Hi
That is the proper first aid to give someone. I not only have GM, had a daughter and her son with GM + was
caregiver in a home that had people with GM seizures, multiple at a time. At work we were always taught to be
calm and keep noise to minimum even when unconscious. This really helps and use to do exactly what the person
in video would do.
I was on all by myself one day, when this person collapsed to the ground, but had seen the strange look in his
eyes and was prepared as were in tight spot sitting at the table. Should he have fallen without support he
would of hit something and hurt himself possibly badly but had time to move other chairs out of way and twist
his chair around. That way he fall into my arms, got one of the others to get a pillow and then pointed to the
telephone so could get the ambulance to come as we were trained.
Until they came I stroked his hair quietly and spoke to quietly just as if were talking to normally. I know
from experience that any 'excitement' around even when unconscious you can sense this and that is what can
bring on that 2nd 3rd or however many seizures.
You do not put anything in the mouth, as tongue can not be swallowed. Not much you can do to relieve the
chewed up mouth but keeping calm around the person. The person being put on his side prevents them from
swallowing fluid or should they start vomiting.
We had a sheet of info that while ambulance people were taking over would fill in to let them know what
happened etc medication on and what type seizure and what happened just before. All good info for the doc.
Another piece of good advice we always did and for anyone who it may relate to here....we always had an
overnight bag with pjays, and clothes for them to come home in ready in their closet - this would go along
with the ambulance too or if no time is available it would be taken after. Meds would go along as well.
Usually just an overnight stay so could supervise and out the following day.
Julie
p.s. remember keep quiet and calm and treat as normal.

Subject: [epilepsy] Seizure first aid video on YouTube

Hello everyone. I just came across a very recently uploaded video on YouTube, which is about a little girl,
probably less than two years old, whose experiencing a tonic clonic seizure (old name: grand mal seizure).
Most likely, the lady who's holding this little girl is probably her mother, and the guy who's recording this
situation, is most likely the girl's father. Anyway, they are going through the recommended procedures in
providing first aid for this little girl. The steps I noticed are: keeping her away from anything that could
hurt her during the seizure; using a video camera with sound in order to record the seizure, and at some point
making sure that her entire body is in the video; timing the length of the seizure; turning the girl on her
side in order to prevent her from swallowing any fluid that might build up inside her mouth during the
seizure; not sticking anything in her mouth; not holding her down; remaining calm throughout the entire
process; holding up the little g

Recording videos like this can be very helpful because it can provide the patient's doctor useful information
for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons can be helping the patient's doctor to make a correct diagnosis
for what type of seizure(s) the patient is experiencing. Another reason, which just popped up in my mind, is
giving the doctor an opportunity to see if anything was done wrong, or was possibly left out, during the time
frame of when a person is providing first aid to an individual who's having a seizure.

I have no idea how long this video is going to remain on YouTube, so hopefully those of you who are reading
this posting will be able to watch the video. At the moment of me posting this topic thread, the link to the
