When did Libby start having seizures? Is this something new, or has
she had them for a long time? It sounds like she doesn't have auras,
which serve as a bit of a warning that a seizure is coming. Does she
have seizures frequently, or was having those two so close together
somewhat unusual for her?
My daughter Megan is now 20 and has had seizures since she was ten.
When she was young, she only had a handful of seizures, but when she
was seventeen, her doctor wanted her to change to a medication that
supposedly had fewer side effects. (Megan never had problems with
side effects from her old med, but is known to cause long term side
effects in women.) When she was on the new drug, she had a lot of
problems. They added a second drug, but her seizures were never
completely under control. Finally, we switched to another doctor, who
weaned her off of the newer drug, and put her back on her original
med. She is doing much better, hasn't had a seizure in over three
months. Megan didn't have auras at first, but in more recent years,
she will often have myoclonic seizure before a generalized tonic
clonic seizure. This often gives her enough warning to sit or lie
down. She has had lots of cuts and abrasions due to having seizures
without warning, but not so much recently.
Depending on her situation, they may want to look into a seizure dog.
Some dogs are seizure alert dogs and can sense a seizure is coming,
while other seizure dogs can help during a seizure in a number of
ways. This is not the best option for every person with epilepsy, but
can be a great help for some.
