VH1 to premiere 'Hollywood Exes:' An Interview with Mayte Garcia
Katrina K Wheeler June 21, 2012 examiner.com
Mayte Garcia is a star. She is a talented dancer, singer and actress. Oh, and yes…she was also once married to Prince, the legendary performer. Garcia's fans remember watching her in various videos alongside her then-husband and The NPG (New Power Generation). Garcia has an infinite amount of fans, and when the news was announced that she would be a part of a new show, they were thrilled. Garcia's talent is evident in all that she does, and her work is synonymous with excellence. Garcia has worked with famed pop star Britney Spears on her renowned "Slave 4 U" music video as well as her 2001 MTV Video Music Awards performance that generated headlines around the world. She has been featured in roles on such hit TV shows as "Psych," "Las Vegas, " and "The Closer, " just to name a few. The star is now starring on a new VH1 show entitled, "Hollywood Exes," which is set to premiere next Wednesday, June 27. Viewers are certainly planning to tune in to watch the highly-anticipated debut. Mayte Garcia will be joined by a few other former wives of some of the biggest names in Hollywood: Nicole Murphy (ex-wife of Eddie Murphy), Sheree Fletcher (ex-wife of Will Smith), Jessica Conseco (ex-wife of Jose Canseco), and Andrea Kelly (ex-wife of R. Kelly).
Mayte Garcia was interviewed and discussed "Hollywood Exes," her plans for the future as it pertains to her career, and much more.
Katrina-Kasey Wheeler: What is it like to star on the new VH1 reality show, "Hollywood Exes" ?
Mayte Garcia: It is really exciting for me. I started dancing at the age of three, and I was on "That's Incredible!" when I was eight. That was "the show" back in the day. After I left Prince and working with him, people just kind of thought of me as being his ex-wife -- they didn't realize that I was a dancer, singer and actress. It was really frustrating, and it still is really frustrating. When I was approached about this show [Hollywood Exes], I thought: "You know, this is really cool, because I can finally address the purple elephant in the room -- no pun intended -- but let's address it, move on, and let people get to know who I am." It has been a struggle, and the fact that there are so many other women on the show, I thought that it would be a good time to share that.
KKW: Is it more difficult to branch out and have the public see one for who they are -- as a star, and not just a celebrity ex-wife after having been married to someone who is famous around the world?
MG: It is hard because people label you as that. I can't speak for the other women, but for me it has been a struggle. I would like to address it and show how I am and how I am living my life now. We have all been married to celebrities, but at the end of the day we are still human beings and we have dealt with divorce in the public eye, and are dealing with it in the public eye, so why not share it?
KKW: What can viewers expect to see on the new show? Will there be ups and downs that are chronicled on the show as is the case with most popular reality shows on television?
MG: When you get five women in a room you are going to see many feelings and heartache. We are being who we are; we all have different things that we are going through and supporting each other with.
KKW: Have you known your co-stars for a long time?
MG: I have known Nicole [Murphy] the longest. I met Sheree [Fletcher] a couple of times, but everyone else is new to me. It is great though, we all have a lot in common.
KKW: Prior to becoming a part of the VH1 show, did you give the possibility of starring on a reality show any consideration?
MG: I had been approached to be a part of different shows, but I didn't think that they were right. This new show -- it's a positive show, we really talked about it. People are like, "Oh, are you going to talk about him [Prince]?" But this show is about me. Yes, I was married to him, but this is about me. I decided to be a part of the show because of the people doing it.
KKW: You have seen such great success when you have starred in roles on various television shows and films. Apart from "Hollywood Exes," what other projects are you working on?
MG: We are still filming the show, and I am in the process of auditioning for a film which is starring William Levy (one of the finalists on the recent season of "Dancing with the Stars"), and it is a dance film. I am really excited about the possibility, because I would get to do both acting and dancing. Viewers will see the struggle, and me going through it. People will see me either get the role or not get it. I am going to
