Re: [fast5] Re: BBC special on low carb

Answer: satiety is linked to protein intake.

Actually there have been studies on this. Interestingly, if you look at ALL the human cuisines, the amount of fat vs. carb varies wildly. But the amount of protein remains rather constant. American cuisine, oddly enough, is actually lower than others in terms of % of calories derived from protein.

This would suggest that human beings will eat as much as they have to, in order to get the correct amount of protein, even if it means getting too many calories.

With some other animals, BTW, the animal will regulate intake of protein, carb, and fat to keep them in the correct percentages, if they can. Human beings though, mainly regulate protein intake. We don't handle large amounts of protein well, so if the protein levels are too high, we stop eating.

This jibes pretty well with what many have said on this list: if you want to not be hungry during your fasting time, make sure you get enough protein the night before! I think the protein source might matter too: whey protein in particular has been noted as helpful for weight loss and muscle gain. I do better with fish myself, and not well with beef.

The problem I have with the Atkins studies though, is that they don't measure how many calories go down the toilet. Fat is notorious for not being digested well by some people. When folks say they eat a pound of fat a day, I kind of wonder if they actually digest all that. Plus your trillions of gut bacteria do their own digesting. Applying the laws of thermodynamics to human beings really doesn't make sense in this context: the food you eat doesn't necessarily even get into your bloodstream, much less get broken down for energy.

Thanks for posting the link though. I do love the BBC!

He did!

What's NOT Fat and NOT Carbs.

The clips are short, but in the end it's quite disappointing, as I think they gave fake results from a very flawed "study". Reading the comments under the YouTube clips will show that many didn't buy into the producers' story. They were silly enough to use as an example of Atkins, a study of High Carbs and High Fat. Video which sucks you in at the beginning, then disappoints at the end.
