[fast5] Re: BBC special on low carb

Hi Tamara-

As Barnaby said, the main conclusion from the film is that fat and carbs increase your appetite and eating protein diminishes hunger. So people on Atkins actually eat less food and thus get results from decreased caloric intake. Not sure if this is the full picture, but that's the jist of the film.

There's another thing that I think has to be said about the Atkins plan...

One thing that I wish the WORLD would do is to actually read Dr Atkin's book, rather than repeating what they hear on the propaganda tube! Eating large amounts of animal proteins and fats is only the first, or induction phase and is used to get people into ketosis, or to get them to start burning fat for fuel. In the final maintenance phase that you're supposed to live on, Dr Atkins recommended vegetables, berries, and lean proteins like fish, egg whites, and turkey. In maintenance phase the recommendation is to eat mostly veggies and occasional low glycemic fruits. Meat was not meant to be the main course for maintenance. I saw him on Larry King years ago and he went down the list of what he ate in a day and what he recommended to his patients once they were off induction phase. It was very much a lean paleo, or hunter gatherer blend of foods. Atkins never intended for people to eat gobs of fat and grease for the rest of their lives.

Rant over.
