Are you taking any supplemental calcium or using products like Alkaseltzer or TUMS? Those are a known cause of kidney stones. If so, consider obtaining your calcium from milk and dairy products. We only use 2% of the calcium supplements and the rest is extracted through the kidneys. I found that out because I got a kidney stone also in 1996, something I NEVER want to repeat if I can help it. We traced the cause to the calcium I was getting nightly in TUMS.
Another little known cause is drinking tap water. In fact, when I came in with a stone, that was their first question...do I drink tap water. I don't...have consumed and cooked with bottled water since 1970.
Still another common cause of stones is not enough water. They say AT LEAST, 8 glasses a day or 2 quarts and more if you work out etc. About 95% of Americans are dehydrated and that was also true of me when I went to the ER for a kidney stone!

>>>>>>In April, I was coming off of one medicine and onto this one and that was completed late April. I take 200mg at night.
May 30th: first-ever kidney stone
June 30th: second one, this one requiring a hospital stay and procedure to get it out
I just turned 38 and they say these things can be common/start in the 40's, but I'm not fully there yet. I drink plenty and never have smoked or drank alcohol (who knows if they are factors)...and I don't think it's a stretch to say that the 'Zanygran' is a possibility even if this can be an uncommon side effect. In the E/R "it might be the better of two evils", well...I disagree.
Anyone please share with me: any such problems not long after starting Zonegran??? I'll be getting off of yet another anticonvulsant soon, it seems.
