[epilepsy] school outings

 

My son is 16 with epilepsy and autism. Whenever he has gone on field trips etc from school a school nurse has been assigned to go with him in the event he needs his diastat.

Since last year my son has made great progress with his epilepsy. He has gone from 7 seizures a month to two a month.

Our school has community/job outings for students with disabilities. My son has no experience with work and has no idea what he would like to do after he graduates. For this reason I want to send him out to the job sites so that he can get some work experience and get an idea of what responsibility is. The students go out into the community several times a week for half a year.

The school nurse does not think he should go out without a nurse even though he is down to 2 seizures a month. The school is reluctant to pay for a nurse on a steady basis but they are afraid to send him out without one. They would prefer that he stay on campus.

What is anyones experience with this type of thing. Certainly we can't deny him opportunities until he is completely seizure free can we? On the other hand I don't want to disregard his safety.

And suggestions?
