[epilepsy] Zonegran - unusual side effect ?

 

Hi everyone,

I've been following the group for over 6 or 7 years, but haven't participated much. My wife, Barbara, has ep (grand mal seizures) and the doctor is controlling with Phenobarbital & Zonegran. 200 mg of each daily (100mg AM/100mg PM).

We're sitting at the kitchen table chatting and she is complaining of inner ear itching. She's had it since around the time she started the Zonegran - around 5 years! After some online research I did indeed find that a side effect of Zonegran can be itching. Looks like a little over 1% of the users have this issue with the drug.

Anyone else suffer from itching while on Zonegran? We're assuming it isn't the Phenobarb since she's been on that for about 30 years. Barbara is a bit hesitant to contact the doc and try to get off the Zonegran, even though it is a low dose. Last time they tried changing meds - which they thought were no longer necessary - the seizure frequency went through the roof. We don't want that to happen again. She hasn't had a sz since last August. The meds don't have everything totally under control, but they're certainly much more manageable than they were while the doctors were "experimenting" with taking away the meds altogether.
