Subject: [NPGUK] NPG Music Festival Aftershow, Amager Bio Copenhagen Mon 8th August (AM)

Not the greatest show but here is a review of sorts.

After the festival finished we went back to our nearby hotel (right by Femøren Metro station) to freshen up quickly, then we proceeded to walk to Amager Bio. Luckily we had walked back from there after the Friday show so we knew the way. It was quite straightforward to walk to and we ended up getting to the back of the queue by Netto on Middelgrundsvej at about 11.55pm. By this time I had got a text that told us "Doors open 1am, show to start 1.30am. 500Krones, cash only" so we knew we were in for about an hour of queuing. The temperature wasn't too bad, it was dry, and someone was playing Prince music through their phone... Happy days

The queue did move a bit eventually so we thought people were being let in but unfortunately we didn't get in till 2.15am and it had got quite a bit colder by then. Oh well nevermind Prince will rock out tonight

We got a coke and a twix and sat down in the lobby till we heard the show was starting up. I think it was about 2.55am at that point. It started off great with the uptempo We Party Hearty done by Shelby with plenty of crowd participation (when we party, we party hearty, when we boogie, we boogie-woogie). Even though we were feeling tired our bodies did actually move and dance a little. Great. No vocals from Prince, a little guitar playing but mainly he was hanging about at the back larking about! Good to see but come out and play man! Some more chanting and then Shelby performed Outstanding. It was still quite good at this stage and I did enjoy Marva King singing a song but the uptempo vibe had now died quite a bit.

Janelle Monae came out and did her song Tightrope - I love her stage presence. She seems so cool and confident in what she does. Didn't recognise the next song (lyrics such as "It's been a long time coming") with a guy on lead vocals, and then that was followed by an unknown rap (mentioned "freestyle" a lot) by a different unknown guy. Then another unknown song was sung, this time by Nikka Costa (she mentioned "Sister" a lot). Come back Shelby, all is forgiven!

Shelby did return for Rude Boy (with Nikka Costa) and Which Way Is Up? but by this time my body couldn't respond and we were pretty pissed at the lack of involvement by Prince. We did notice him pushing Janelle forward to get more involved but we felt sorry for her as she obviously didn't know the songs or what to do. She stood watching Cassy play keys and then had a go herself  She then tried to use the synth but Prince didn't seem to like that very much!

Prince finally did something of note, he played the guitar for Play That Funky Music - not happy. Play your own stuff man! Then Everybody Got Their Something with Nikka Costa and a bit of Love Rollercoaster (again guitar but no vocals). At this point Prince left and didn't come back for the rest of the show.

Paloma Faith came on to sing a beautiful Etta James cover. I didn't know much of Paloma before the show but she has definitely impressed me. Her and Janelle were big stand outs from the weekend.

A bit of jamming to end the show with the I Like Funky Music chants and it was all over at 4.37am.

Saw a German and French fan afterwards that were very disappointed with the show. There were plenty of pissed off faces. Naturally we were disappointed and pissed too but looking on the bright side we got an amazing show on Friday night for 300krones when we were only expecting an NPG Jam. So the shows were reversed somewhat. I guess the problem is the level of expectation. We expected Prince to do something and even 2 of his own songs would have been better than nothing!
