Subject: [NPGUK] NPG Music Festival Day 2, Copenhagen Sun 7th August
We had another very enjoyable day at the NPG festival on the Sunday. It turned out to be a very long day and night!
First up were the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble at 1.45pm. They were actually quite good, combining elements of music and rap. Very uptempo and catchy and they even went to the merchandise stall after their set to sign merchandise and anything else.
There was about a 20 minute wait before Nikka Costa's set at 2.40pm. She was ok but the set was pretty much the same as the one on Saturday. She finished her set about 3.45pm.
Seemed to take quite a while to set up for Janelle Monae's set but she came on at 4.45pm and played a fantastic hour long set. We really enjoyed it. About 3/4 through her set, Janelle walked down the catwalk and was quickly followed by a speeding Prince who proceeded to put her cloak on. That was nice to see and made the crowd go wild getting a glimpse of the main man. He looked so relaxed and cool as usual
Quite a wait again before the next set but the sunshine was lovely. Just before Chaka Khan was due to begin Prince came out and took pictures of the crowd. Chaka's set started at 6.40pm with I Feel 4 U, followed by Ain't Nobody and Stay. Next up was What Cha' Gonna Do for Me, Angel and Through The Fire. Following that was some nice guitar work then You've got the love and Tell me something good. The lovely Sweet Thing was next and was even better than usual when Prince joined Chaka, playing guitar and singing a little. Chaka was even trying to match his guitar licks with her powerful voice. Very entertaining After the song had finished and Prince had left the stage, Chaka finished her set with I'm Every Woman with guest Paloma Faith (her set on the Saturday was fun). A very nice set and the perfect warm up for the main act of the day/night.
Prince came out about 8.18pm and played a little on the drums, then the piano, then the synthesiser. He was playful and it was like he was checking the sound of the instruments. He seemed to be quite satisfied and so were we when he went over and picked up the bass and started jamming. Larry Graham joined him on stage and they jammed on Funky - wow! (Let's get funky, yeah! Get it on, right on! Everyday!). What a great way to open the set! They jammed for ages and Prince said something like "We have a lot to do and will be playing in the city" - arrgh no internet access so text a friend to have a quick look! At this moment I was thinking we would head to Amager Bio again afterwards and take a look
Nikka Costa joined for a few minutes and Prince said something like "Look at the moon... It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" They were joined by members of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble for Stand, before doing a rousing version of The Jam. Prince joking that they can get Larry Graham on stage but the problem is getting him off stage! He did leave after that though but it was nice to see Larry there again after the Saturday was cut short.
Controversy was up next, followed by Let's Go Crazy where Janelle Monae joined on stage and left after Delirious. It was definitely a party and 1999 kept that going. Little Red Corvetter was up next, then Prince made us laugh when he said something about Sinead having a tan to Shelby just before they did Nothing Compares 2 U! Take Me With U followed and then we got Anotherloverholenyohead which was great. A great version of Empty Room followed, then back to party mood with DMSR, Pop Life and Musicology. Prince played a little of Ida's bass and then The Look of Love was sung beautifully by Andy Allo.
Of the shows we went to on the tour we hadn't experienced the sampler set so it was quite refreshing that it was done this time. Some of the expected tracks were played but were very enjoyable, especially When Doves Cry, Hot Thing, Sign O' The Times, Mr Goodnight and I Would Die 4 U. Will Darling Nikki ever be sung again?
Following the sampler set was If I Was Your Girlfriend and a great version of Purple Rain, powerful and emotional. Luckily the only rain that night, none of that intense rain from the Saturday! Prince was off for a few minutes and then came back and did Kiss which also went down very well. My phone vibrated about 10.29pm so I checked it and it was a text from the Moquake tweet "Amager Bio R U ready (again)?" Thanks guys
A little after this, lots of fireworks were set off into the night sky. Very nice but was that the end of the show? Oh no!
Party time again for the next 20 minutes with The Bird, Jungle Love and A Love Bizarre. Quite a lot of fans were invited on to the stage as well as some of the performing acts, Larry Graham, Nikka Costa, Paloma Faith and Janelle Monae. I think there were some of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble there too. It looked very busy on stage but everyone was having a great time.
What a great end to the NPG Music & Arts Festival. We really enjoyed it and will definitely go back to Copenhagen again. What a lovely place and the people were so friendly.
