There are two different test, a sleep study and a long term EEG.
If this is one night, at a sleep center, it is a sleep study. These are
typically done to discover sleep irregularities such as sleep apnea. If
this is the case there is no reason they should need you to go off your
meds.
Long term EEG's however are done to discover the focal point of
seizures. These are done in the hospital, by trained EEG techs,
supervised by your Dr. If this is the case, they will often take you
off your meds because the point is to have sieuzres while on the EEG. I
have 2 of these done, and they did not take me off my meds until I was
int he hospital.
Never go off your meds without your Drs. consent. If this is in fact a
sleep study and they are telling you to go off of them, take the
following steps:
-Ask them why they need you to do this
-Call the Dr. that referred you for the sleep study to tell them they
are instructing you to go off meds, and the reason you gave. Ask your
Dr. if this is necessary based on the reason they gave.
-If the Dr. says you are not go off your meds, ask the Dr. to call the
sleep center directly about this.
-If it was not your neuro ro epileptologist who referred you for the
study, call them as well. Explain the situation, and ask them to call
the Dr. that ordered the sleep study to consult them.
If your Dr./Neuro disagree with the decision of the center, you need to
have them call the center directly since they are the referring physician.
