By Samantha Lawton Apr 17, 2011, 10:40 GMT Global superstar Prince has revealed that he auctioned off his precious gold guitar to none other than British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton - for a mere $100,000.
The flamboyant Purple Rain singer, who this week announced a series of Los Angeles tour dates, thrilled audiences on Lopez Tonight by stopping by for a rare TV appearance.
Holding up the dazzling Fender Stratocaster, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, whose efforts have raised $2m for charity, said: "We got $100,000 for that from my brother Lewis Hamilton, the race car driver.
'It's gonna be hard to part with this, let me tell you.'
He had introduced and played the gilt instrument during a string of shows in December in New York and New Jersey.
The Formula One champion, 26, is known to be a guitar enthusiast and has previously revealed how strumming helps him relax before big races.
His cash will now benefit the Harlem Children's Zone, a US community organisation that helps more than 17,000 families.
Asked by host George Lopez whether he still has his first ever guitar, seven-times Grammy winner Prince gave a curious reply: 'No a lot of my stuff gets stolen.'
He was not asked to elaborate by the host.
A strict vegetarian, Prince had only a simple rider on Wednesday night - asking for only water, fruit juice, organic tortilla chips and grapes. "Beautiful lover, friend, I'll never leave you again You and me, we're sticky like glue" ~Prince 2010~ |
