Hello Fast-5ers --
I haven't joined in the conversation in the group for a number of years. Some of you may remember me from Judi's Fast-5 Trek. Enough time has passed that I couldn't access my original user information, so I registered as a new user. I'll have to talk to Bert about how to reconcile the two, but that's not my priority right now.
I'm writing today to thank this community for taking action yesterday when the intermittent fasting story was aired on The Diane Rehm Show. Many of you commented on the program's blog and the wife of one of the Yahoo group members even called into the show. That was gold!!!
It has amplified awareness substantially as demonstrated by increased traffic to the Fast-5 website, an increase in the number of people requesting to join the Facebook public and private groups and in generating traffic to the YouTube video produced and released by the D.I.E.T. Life Network on The Real Fast-5 YouTube channel.
In the aftermath of the NPR flurry, it occurred to me that this group would benefit from an introduction to some of the activities underway to help push Fast-5 further into the mainstream. As a nonprofit with no staff except two volunteers (Bert and me), Fast-5 could use some help. That's where D.I.E.T.Life Network came onto the scene.
The D.I.E.T. Life Network was inspired by Dr. Bert Herring's TEDx talk during which he recast the word "diet" as an acronym for Did I Enrich Today? He left the audience with a call to action that was brilliant in my opinion. He suggested that every time they see the word "diet" on newsstands or other places, they ask themselves the question, "Did I Enrich Today?"
It is in that spirit that we've expanded the conversation beyond the Fast-5 way of eating to encompass the Fast-5 way of life --- an enriched life with generous yield in the form of non-scale victories. By including Fast-5 as a featured resource, D.I.E.T. Life Network is able to introduce Fast-5 to those looking for enrichment resources, even if intermittent fasting would not typically be something they might consider to be enriching.
Some of the content that may be of interest to members of this group include:
- Dr. Herring's summary of the highlights of The Diane Rehm Show and his insight that the agent of change that will solve the obesity epidemic is "the average individual who, given clear information and freedom from the barrage of dogmatic dietary commandments, can find, shape and share a dynamic life-long personal best practice for health."
- Fast-5 success stories. We'd love to feature the experience of members of this group so that Fast-5 newbies can gain inspiration and insight from veteran Fast-5ers. If anyone in this group would like to share his or her story, please contact us.
- An easily shareable video. We're working to make 2014 Fast-5's break out year with plans underway to begin to provide research grants and a number of other initiatives. Please share the video if you're comfortable doing so. I know many stay under the radar because of the naysayers.
- Forums. This is a great conversational space and is the preferred style for many of you. I'm only offering this link so that you know of the other forum where Fast-5 is a primary topic. Please join in the conversation there if it makes sense for you to do so.
This is a long post, so I'll wrap up. Congratulations on the many years you've committed to this way of life and thank you for your contribution to Fast-5's growth. I hope you all have a fun, productive and healthy 2014!!
All the best,
Judi
