[epilepsy] Re: Mother of two

Hi,
I might have missed a few of the posts in this thread. I know about this with other neuo issues but am not sure about it with a parent with seizures but you might want to consider calling your local police ahead of time. Most police departments have a program to pre-register homes/ individuals if there is a medical situation. You call the non-emergency number and they can usually take the information over the phone or you can check the website usually through the city site or police department. Due to the explosion of autism, many police departments have these programs. I have my son registered. The police know that whenever an emergency or police call is sent to my house, that my son may not respond as expected. It is good for the police and me because there isn't time to explain all of it in a crisis so on the computer in the car on the way to my house, they are getting the information.
I am thinking of it for you because what if you, God forbid, have a seizure and are on the floor in view of the front door. The UPS man or mailman comes to the door and sees you. They see you and call 911. The police get involved and it could get messy. But if you have things in place ahead of time in showing yes, I am aware, we have a plan for my children, we have done everything possible, etc. it will go much smoother. No, it won't stop the mailman from calling 911 and the police/ambulance from coming but I am thinking of someone calling CPS down the road.
You might also have your plan in writing in a plastic protector sheet and have it on the fridge. Have it for other adults who come into the home so they know what to do. Also you can find on the net, icons to help teach your kids what to do when. Look under PECS or augmentable communication and you will find little pictures that you can put in a line like a sentence. You can make it so that when your older one is away ( yes believe me as a parent there could be a situation, something could come up and you are in the house with just the younger one) even your younger one could follow the directions.
I could be wrong. I am just thinking it is better to have things in place because you can't explain when it is all happening. I yield to others here on the list who have much more experience as parents with seizure disorder.
