"I was pretty wild in my younger days," said Prince, "You don't have to do what I did. You don't have to make any of the mistakes I made."
The tribute opened with Janelle Monae singing "Let's Go Crazy." Then Esperanza Spalding sang "If I was Your Girlfriend." Then Alicia Keys sang "Adore." Finally, R&B powerhouse Pattie LaBelle sang "Purple Rain." Labelle kicked off her shoes and Prince grabed one of them during the powerful performance.
Then Chaka Khan joined Labelle as they both introduced Prince. Prince was calm and subdued in his acceptance speech.
"Thank you so much Debra Lee and Stephen Hill for a wonderful night tonight," he said. "I'll never forget it for as long as he live." He then left in the arms of both Labelle and Chaka Khan.
