Steve, did these people die from seizure activity itself or from some accident caused by loss of consciousness during seizure? In one way, it's all seizure related, but I am interested in knowing what the rate of death is that is solely due to seizure activity itself.
I know that one of Megan's doctors lost two patients who drowned in the bathtub. I imagine some with epilepsy might drown while swimming, die in a car crash or die in a number of ways that are due to circumstances like these. We can act to protect ourselves or our loved ones from these kinds of deaths, but I think it might be harder to protect against deaths caused by status elepticus, for example. (Sorry if that's not spelled right. My spell checker was having fits every way I tried to spell it :)
Do you know of any reliable stats on the number of deaths each year that are attributable to epilepsy?
