I also got switched to generic lamitcal with no prior notice from a mail order pharmacy. I started feeling "funny" as though more auras might be coming, so I contacted my doctor right away. The nurse said that the doc doesn't want anyone going on generic. So she wrote me another script for brand name. The insurance company had no problem in covering the extra cost. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
As an aside, the same mail order pharamacy tried to switch my Keppra to generic without prior notice. (I'm use both Lamictal and Keppra at the same time.) So I had to do the same process with contacting my doc and getting a new brand name script for the Keppra too.
