Simy.
I am 48 with uncontrolled gm's since age 18. It is difficult to define the Post-Ictal phase because to begin all of our seizures are different. Mine can range from 30 seconds to 5 minutes with anywhere from 15 sec to 30 minutes to become fully aware. Conscious usually in 0-4 minutes and knowing who and where I am and those around me can take 0-10 minutes. Sometimes I jump back up and return to work, volleyball, children... whatever and sometimes strength, coordination, awareness and or balance can take a day. Often times a 30 minute nap right away is great. Often the exhaustion puts me to sleep before ever waking up. Do not be afraid to wake him up to escort him to the nearest most comfortable location to fall back asleep less than 10 minutes after the attack and do not be afraid or offended if he/she does not recognize you. Introduce yourself, your relationship, the situation, and the offer to escort him/her to a more comfortable place to rest. Even if it is just a better place on the floor and position to lie down with something under the head. Sam. I share an apartment with a lady who has had uncontrolled attacks since age 2. Hers are less severe, but more frequent. She can signal me during an aura letting me know what type of attack it will be. Certain attacks of hers can be broken by pinching her had or arm very hard. The pain and shock can break those attacks. This is unique to her so continue to communicate with your child about what he/she remembers before, during and after the attacks. We are in Colorado and are happy to meet with you, your child, and any other friends and family that are interested in asking questions or listening and learning from the rest of us. We will be in NJ from August 6-20 if you are on the east coast. SAM
