[fast5] Re: Appetstat

Heather's post about appestat reminded me of a quote from Dr. Bert that I found at the Fast-5 site.  Here's the link: www.fast-5.com/content/hams-progress-report-and-success-story#comment-621

This little gem was buried in someone's thread and was just too good not to share!

(Dr. Bert's response to a person who was worried that they weren't eating enough calories.)

Dated 3/15/2011:

Title:
Let your "appestat" count the calories

"One of the many reasons the Fast-5 way of eating has been successful for many people is that the extended interval between eating gives the body a chance to measure how much energy it has stored in the form of fat and adjust the appetite accordingly, much like a thermostat gauging the temperature -- such that some people call it the "appestat."
It sounds like that is happening now for you. Your body is realizing you are carrying an excess reserve of energy (fat/fuel) of over 300,000 calories. It is using that fuel now and telling you that you don't need to eat as much as you think you do. You can trust your appetite -- it's worked for millions of years for animals and hundreds of thousands of years for humans, making sure we eat enough to survive. It's dealt with famines and sporadic food supplies, but until recently, it never had to deal with people eating an excess of food three times a day.

You're giving your body the chance to work like it should. It will take time -- a pound per week is a good, steady pace. Faster loss than that is fine, but consider anything above a pound per week to be icing on the cake.

Best wishes to you for your success."
