Re: [epilepsy] Re: The whole magnesium deficiency argument

Shan,
The increased electrical activity does not cause a seizure, seizures are electrical messages between two neurons one message to another,a seizure take place when that electrical message is received by more than one other neuron. The cause of the increase of electrical activity is the cause of the seizure. The focus of seizure activity is the spot that the seizure begins.Seizure activity is likely to expand from that exact spot, sometimes a partial seizure travels between both hemispheres of the brain becoming a secondary generalized seizure.

I did not say that the scar tissue was caused by a magnesium deficiency. And a magnesium deficiency does not do that eihter. Maybe you should try reading again? You sure bombed out that time Do you have a reading problem or is it just comprehension?

It could have been a result of trauma as a baby, you have no idea and you do not have the AUTHORITY to make such claims.

And magnesium calms the tissue cells so that they do not get irritated and give off increased electrical energy - magnesium regulates the electrical activity in the brain as well as in the heart. What do you think makes the scar tissue irritated and what do you think causes it to have increased electrical activity? I would be interested in your answer to that as I have asked several neurologists over the years but none have been able to explain that.

Increasing magnesium does decrease seizures as well as decrease them completely. It is the extra electrical activity that magnesium decreases. And studies have proved that too.

It isn't appropriate to say that all szs result from mag deficiency (and I don't recall seeing that in Shan's post), but AEDs are, in fact, known to deplete mag, D, and other crucial vitamins and minerals. When I told my endocrinologist that I was still having SP clusters at season change a few years ago, she suggested adding mag. I checked it with my neurosurgeon (who manages all my brain matters), and he said it might help. It took some of the punch out of them, and I didn't have as many, but my SPs didn't stop. Even so, it was worth trying,
