RE: [epilepsy] Switching from Keppra to generic

Yup, that is how are prescription labels are. BUT when a generic is
available and you, the user choose or insist on brand, YOU must pay the
difference. When serious conditions exist requiring strict control due to
possible life threatening conditions that type of letter can help the
patient get his / her insurance to wave the higher cost from Generic to
Brand, Which I think is Terry's goal to get stability and because generics
for him are negatively impacting him it is not his choice but medical
necessity. The pharmacy doesn't know that our drugs are being used for
Seizure control, they just fill the script and pay the bill. Many of our
AED's are also used as antidepressants which, I don't know, but have less of
detrimental effect when generics are used.

This puts the pharma and insurer on notice that it is not just the user
making the request and that helps get the better rate. At least it worked
for us. And it has been a big help for our daughter.

Terry,

On every Rx that the Dr. writes there is a space that he can say whether it
should
be brand name or generic I think there is a space where he can just put an X
or
a check if it is OK to have a generic.

Hi Pat,

Thanks, that's good to know. I didn't know that it would make a difference.
Walgreen's gave me a hard time last month and gave me the generic without
asking me if I wanted to change it. When I told them that I wouldn't accept
the generic they told me that they were out of Keppra and that I would have
to take the generic. When I refused again, they gave me the name brand.
Yesterday they doubled the copay and when I asked why, they told me to call
my insurance company. Thanks again.

Hi Terry you can ask your Doc to provide you a letter stating that due to
your condition brand name drug is mandatory blah blah blah. They know the
game and how to write it. We got one when we had to get Gianna off 2
generics cause they kept switching manufacturers on us and it was bad.
Insurance accepted it and now we pay the generic rate for BRAND! Let me know
and I can email you it for reference.

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone switched from the name brand Keppra to the generic form of it? I
have heard that it is not good to change to a generic if you have been
taking the name brand. Keppra has been controlling my seizures (along with
generic Dilantin). My pharmacy has tried to get me to change to the generic,
but I refused and now my copay has doubled. Thanks for any thoughts on this
subject. Take care.

Terry
