Re: [epilepsy] Re: seizures caused by myelin breakdown

Kelly,

I am only hypothesizing on the possibility of an auto-immune induced seizure. However there are so many auto-immune problems and disorders (although some are truly rare), that cause breakdowns in the myelin sheath.

Think of the myelin as the covering of an electrical wire. The myelin insulates and protects the electrical current from losing its circuit or shorting. Now imagine an auto-immune response where your own body attacks the sheath and eats away at the "insulation". Now imagine a bunch of wires lined up with each other all with little breaks in the insulation. Now the current is allowed to jump from one circuit to another, in electrical terms this is called a short and in electrical systems there are circuit breakers and fuses that protect the entire system.

Therefore, theoretically if your brain has all of these shorts and surges, it could be hypothesized that this could cause dysfunction and abnormal brain activity, possibly causing seizures. It is entirely possible, theoretically.  MS and Parkinson's cause involuntary spasms, each person's body is capable of so many anti-body mutations, it is entirely possible that some of us have a unique anti-body dysfunction that neurologists may have never seen nor can they isolate.

I am hoping to get a PET scan or SPEC scan sometime in the future, hope to see if they can identify what parts of my brain are under or over active.

I am not a doctor, nor do I have a degree in medicine. THEREFORE, this is discussion ONLY and not to be taken as scientific fact, please do not think that this is based on anything other than my own observation and thought.

However, I do have a son that was diagnosed with autism only to find out after much fighting with doctors that he had an auto-immune dysfunction. It is entirely possible, that is all I am saying.

This is the first I have heard of this. I have been tested so many

times for various auto immune disorders. I have so many symptoms. My

husband likes to say I have all the symptoms of an auto immune disorder

except one-the diagnosis! I would wonder how seizures caused my a

breakdown in myelin would show on an an eeg. I am post right temporal

lobectomy and my seizures were once every 5 weeks for a little while

then they ramped up starting aobut 8 months ago-and did so quickly.

About that same time I developed raynauds (typical of auto immune

disorders but possible to get alone) and also got some other weird

symptoms they never figured out. All the tests were negative. Good

however no answers. Been down that road before as my seizures went

undiagnosed a the beginning for a year--hence how they most likely ended

up being intractable!
