[epilepsy] Re: To Shan & all, seizures are the result not the the cause, so learn the cause

The bottom line is a seizure cannot happen without the burst of electrical energy from the neurons. Regardless what causes the large burst of electrical energy , the electrical energy is what goes to the brain stem and causes the seizure to happen. Depending where the burst of energy originated plus how big it is, is what determines what kind of seizure is caused. Without the burst of electrical energy there would be no seizure. And that is why magnesium stops seizures - it does not stop a lesion/scar tissue from being made - it does not make the scar tissue vanish. It stops the unregulated and abnormal bursts of electrical energy. It does not matter if it is a brain tumour that triggered the neuron to fire off a large burst of electrical energy or if it was irritated cells in the scar tissue that caused the neuron to fire off a the large burst of electrical energy or if it was damaged cells/brain tissue which triggered the "neurons to fire in a disordered manner" etc. - it is the burst of electrical energy from the neurons that makes a seizure happen, or put another way, it is the disordered firing of the neurons that cause the seizure.. And if there is no large burst of electrical energy/ no disordered firing of neurons then there is no seizure. Or I will put it this way - if there is no neurons that " fire in a disordered manner" then there is no seizure. It is actually quite straightforward. And the EEG is sensitive to the electrical energy or the neurons firing in the brain - that is what an EEG records. That is how an EEG records seizures - it records the electrical energy from the neurons firing it records both 'normal' bursts of electrical energy as well as disordered or abnormal electrical energy. It records the size plus length of the bursts of electrical energy and where they comes from too. An EEG technician then measures all this and writes it up with a summary for the neurologist.

By the way, be careful about using Wikipedia as a main source of information - a lot of its information is correct but it has been sued several times because of inaccurate information. As long as you don't use it as the only source it should be okay because you can check it against a reliable source.

Sounds like an interesting book.............

> Shan, I don't know if you were responding to a ? or making one in your recent post. However as you know I have studied much too for my daughters sake. In my opinion the cause of a seizure is not "the electrical activity" however the faulty electrical activity is the result of the cause. I have found much valuable help by reading on MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION and Mitochondria, which is/ are the energy power plant within all cells. Yes scar tissue is involved at the cellular level. If one also reads up on the process of Epileptogenesis this relationship is readily understandable. One begins to fuel the other, leading to a perpetual process.

> Epileptogenesis is a process by which a normal brain develops epilepsy, a chronic condition in which seizures occur.[1] The process, which is gradual, occurs in symptomatic epilepsy, in which seizures are caused by an identifiable lesion in the brain.[2] It results from acute brain insults such as traumatic brain injury (physical trauma to the brain), stroke, or infection. Epileptogenesis is a series of events that occur between the event that causes epilepsy and the first spontaneous seizure.[3] In epileptogenesis, an array of events occur on molecular and cellular levels that cause neurons to fire in a disordered manner, resulting in seizures.

> All living things originate at the cell level and this short book really helps one to understand this and regarding EPILEPSY the last line of the Wikipedia definition above should catch all of our interests. The sooner we begin to understand this neuronal firing process and its dysfunction and causes of it we can begin to understand our own body and its own deficiency and hopefully based on each of our own particular "REASON" for epilepsy begin to eliminate the source which for some may be serizure freedom and or as in my daughters case greatly reduced seizure activity and greatly reduced medication regimen which all translates into better quality of life for her. I urge everyone here to get and read the paperbook, it's only 56 pages long and filled plus 6 more reference pages.
