I read the articles in "Newsweek" (bought the issue). I was very disappointed in them because of the following:
1. they lumped all types of ep together - this is wrong
2. they talked about EP as a "disease which kills" and this is untrue in most cases. I read through the articles to find HOW EP "kills" and nothing was really said except hinting about "status epilecticus" (which in most cases, is treatable) and falling during a seizure which is a repercussion and not directly caused by EP.
It's almost as if they were kind of spreading scare tactics to obtain funding for "research" and the "Epilepsy Society" rather than giving information.
Also petit mal sz do not do a lot (if any) damage to the brain... again it's only a small percentage who get brain damage from sz. And in most cases, temporal lobe sz are fairly mild especially partial temporal lobe sz.
I was very disappointed - the articles could have been so good and really informed the public, answering some of the "myths" and "fears" about EP but I found them extremely UN-informative and basically just selling surgery and spreading scare tactics. :(
