Re: [epilepsy] What Is Happening To Me?

Well, Mike - how does my Neuro discover if i have this Jamais Vu???

And another poster said absence petit mall seizures when I sit here at my computer and all of a sudden 'zone out'.

Then another person said TIAs when I'm driving, which personally, is what my gut tells me...

Pat,

What you are experiencing is Jamais Vu (you don't recognize things that should be familiar) - the opposite of Deja Vu. I've been having similar episodes for about 12 months - a new symptom after being diagnosed with epilepsy some 40 years ago. It has happened when driving, at home, at work, etc. Like yourself, there is never a feeling of panic because I instinctively know what is happening. "surreal" is a very good description of how one feels. My episodes last less than a minute. An increase in the amount of Keppra that I take has gotten these episodes under control.
A normal EEG doesn't, necessarily, prove or disprove anything in regards to these events.

About 3 months ago I was driving at night en route to pick up my
brother.
I was on a familiar major highway for a little while then got off at
the usual exit...when all of a sudden I didn't know where I was nor
where I was headed. There were lots of bright lights from gas
stations and restaurants and I didn't feel panicky - almost surreal
as if I was watching a movie.
I knew I was on that road for a reason and maybe 45 seconds later I
remembered I was going to get my brother. I got him just fine yet on
the ride home, I got off at another well known exit and soon as I
entered the brightly lit street, poof, again my mind went blank.

I was too embarrassed and mortified to tell any one and waited 10
days and finally made an appt with
my Neurologist who ordered an EEG which returned normal.

Now 2 nights ago after spending an evening inside Chuck E Cheese's
with my 8-1/2 year old grandson...soon after I pulled out on to the
big road with all the lights, I flat out did not know why I was there
nor where I was going.
I will say I felt VERY disconcerted that my grandson was in the car
and I'm zoning out! I kept my hand on his knee for comfort [he didn't
know what was happening] - and within 25 seconds I managed to
understand where I was by seeing familiar stores and got us home
safely.
During this 3rd episode I felt as if the road was heading
upwards...you know, like I was slowly traveling up a hill? And I live
in South Florida where there aren't even tall ant mounds - ha ha!

I just don't get it!

No headaches, no recent new meds at all with these incidences.

I have perused the Internet and see where I definitely relate to
deja vu, not so much with these episodes, yet my entire life in
general, ever since I was a young child.
Baffling.
