Re: [epilepsy] Depakote, seizures & antioxidants follow up

When I started taking the Lamictal, I was on 3,000mgs of Depakote. My neurologist was lowering the Depakote and raising the Lamictal. I haven't been on Depakote since Neurontin came out. I slept a lot with the Depakote and weighed a lot more too.

Sue Joan good stuff there! Even more important than the caffeine in sodas, coffee & some teas is that they contain high free radical content & therefore increase cellular Oxidization very bad for those with Epi:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19040338

Coffee is also a diuretic which depletes water loss, improper hydration increases Oxidative Stress, can be a trigger of seizures too. If you like tea try green tea, it's the most antioxidizing of all teas.

In my daughter increases in Depakote increased her seizures. She is now totally off it and only on Trileptal with no increase in seizures. In fact her nasty tonic Clonics are gone and when she does seize they are mostly mild partials like she used to have. Did the Depakote cause stronger seizures too? I wonder. Antioxidants have helped her so much it is hard to believe so maybe the Depakote "worked against her"??, see section 4.4 in the link below. If only each brain reacted the same way!

Great Study on Epi & Antioxidants. These "first choice drugs for various Epi Syndromes" increase Oxidative Stress load AND harm our natural Antioxidant defense systems. See top "Abstract" & most importantly section 4.4. 3.1 is good too! http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3606551/  all this makes sense with this 2011 study from Neurosurgery report: http://journals.lww.com/neurosurgery/Fulltext/2011/12000/Seizures_and_Free_Radicals___the_Antioxidant_May.3.aspx

Interesting stuff finally coming along for us. If you want to know more about this line of Complimentary help for seizure control let me know.

Have you tried making dietary changes like avoiding everything with caffeine in it...(like coffee)? Caffeine lowers the seizure threshold.....so does cola soda... Most soda has caffeine in it. Most Tea also has caffeine in it. There are other foods you can avoid which lower the SZ threshold...

Also check other meds...

hope it works good for you. I took Depakote and Lamictal for a few
months. I went 4 months without a seizure, but when my neurologist started
increasing the dosage of the Lamictal I started developing a rash. She told
me they interacted with each other, so I was took off the Lamictal. I had
to take Benedryl for a couple of weeks to get rid of the rash. I am on
Keppra and Vimpat now. I still have seizures every now and then.I haven't
found a good combination since those two.TC.
