Re: [epilepsy] Vimpat?

Hi Andrea,

I started off a while ago on Keppra. I was at 1500mg BID and started to be depressed, so I was sad to change. First I switched to Zonegran, then added trileptal. Was fine, then we decided to drop zonegran and add Vimpat. Worst mistake! After not having a seizure where I lost consciousness for years, I had one.

So I'm back to trileptal and 1500mg of Keppra a day. So much better!!

It didn't work for me, but that doesn't mean it won't work for you. I have a very hard type of epilepsy to manage.

Good luck!

Subject: [epilepsy] Vimpat?

Hi!

I have complex partial seizures that rarely escalate into generalized seizures (its been years, but it can happen again). I currently take 600 mg of carbamazepine twice a day and 1500 mg of Keppra twice a day. My doc has been pushing me for quite some time to go off the carbamazepine and try Vimpat instead. Several things worry me about making the change. First, it's new and EXPENSIVE. Second, it's new and the last time I tried something new it was withdrawn from the market without warning and while switching to something else, I ended up in the ER after a bad gran mal that caused a nasty head bump. Third, the doc seems a little overzealous about this drug, so I'm wondering if there's something in it for him that might be clouding his judgement on this. I have a few questions...

1) Are there any incentives for physicians to prescribe Vimpat?

2) Has anyone here had success with Vimpat?

3) How common and severe are the side effects?

Thanks in advance for your help!

:) Andrea
