First, I am sorry you are having to sort this all out.
The definition of epilepsy is a person who has seizures. The causes
vary widely, but the cause is irrelevant to the umbrella diagnosis of
epilepsy. Think of it this way, there are several different causes and
types of seizures, but they are all subsections of the one diagnosis.
For example, I have (long name) right temporal lobe epilepsy with
complex partial seizures, (short name) epilepsy.
Also, it is normal to have to try several meds before finding one that
works for any individual. Everyone's body responds differently to them,
plus the type and cause of the seizures make them work differently. I
had to try 5 before landing on a combination of them that worked. That
is not unusual.
If you can get in to see an epileptologist (a neurologist that
specializes in treating epilepsy) do so. They have additional training
that qualifies them even further to diagnosis and treat epilepsy. You
can try to find one on your insurance carriers provider list, or check
out http://www.naec-epilepsy.org/ to find one near you.
You will find everyone on this list very helpful.
