[epilepsy] Re: Introduction New to group

Milwaukee is only 75 miles north of me. I'm just north of Chicago.

Hi Kate,
I'm from Baltimore, work in College Park MD near end of DC Metros Green Line.Been
on 25-30 medicines&had an unsuccessful left temporal lobectomy in '96.I spent
too much time with my original neurologist.I went to NIH for a test in '96 I was
told that there isn't anything good with Univ. of MD's Hosp..I wish I gave up
then.A visit to Johns Hopkins was allot better,to see that change I moved up to
NYU.Currently on Keppra XR and Vimpat, it seem to be working allot better than
30 years of attempts mostly on three meds at a time.I wonder if one wonder be
better. Since diagnosed in '73,I've never been on mono-therapy. Tim Baldwin

Re: [epilepsy] Re: medication management

I wish more pharmacies did the pre-packaged pills. We only have 2 left in the area that do. It's a big help.

I definitely agree Nedra--keeping a list of your medications with you, the mg/dose, your allergies and bringing it with you to every doctor appointment is an excellent idea. My friend did that when she went through cancer and handed them out to everyone.

I'm always asking my elder clients for their med list--they either don't know them, or don't know how many milligrams they take. It definitely makes it easier on us case managers!

Nedra,
I work with elders, and you may want to let your friends know there are machines that can separate and dispense medication. Of course, they have to be filled by someone, but if a parent is unable to follow a weekly pill case, this machine can be filled with a month's worth of medications. I know our agency will purchase it if they receive services from us--we just build it into their service plan.

Thanks. I know. I also know there are pharmacies that will put the meds in plastic packets. My friend's father's meds had just changed so he doesn't have a standard medication plan just yet. But I will pass this on to him. I have 3 special needs kids and I have health issues so I have to manage medications for several people which is why I have my system. Due to insurance and one member on Social Security, we do a combo of mail order and local pharmacy.

I have my system in place and the directions for it in case I get hit by a bus so my spouse knows how to do the medications, when things are due, ect. Also as a special need parent, I don't know if my son will ever be able to manage by himself so I have to have things written in place cause I am not always going to be here.

Okay this is me thinking of only speculation but consider this......

Oprah is closing up shop in late may I think may 25th is the last show.

Prince is on tour.

May is sweeps month on tv.

Prince has only appeared on Oprah once during the past 25 years of the show. In November 1996 with the release of Emancipation.

The Oprah is keeping the final month's guests a secret but did announced today that the last few shows will be taped at the United Center (where the chicago bulls play) instead of the studio.

Prince's welcome to america has been playing at sporting venues like the united center.

Prince and Oprah are friends since his appearance on the show in '96

Prince's tour hasn't played chicago yet.

Prince has a huge fan base in chicagoland area......

Me is thinking once Prince finishes up here in LA, he just might be heading to chicago? Hmmmmmmm one can only hope!

Okay so what do you think of my crazy idea? Prince on oprah in the untited center playing on his symbol stage. Am I crazy to think this?

[fast5] OT: walking works for me

I suppose exercise is sort of off topic, but I just thought I would mention this.

I live in a city where I walk a lot and it's an easy way for me to put some exercise in by walking quickly. I can walk for my errands, it helps me a lot.

I have also read that walking is an exercise with the least risk of injury.

To lose weight, put a little spring in your step

When it comes to weight control, almost nothing is easier and cheaper than brisk walking.
Going for a walk every day can improve mood, increase energy, lower blood pressure and protect against diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer.
But to reap these benefits, you need to get the lead out and put some spring in your step.
It's not window shopping or taking a stroll in the park. Walk like you're late for the bus.
You should be able to carry on a conversation, but you'll be a little breathless when you talk, says Miriam Nelson, director of the John Hancock Research Center on Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity Prevention at Tufts University in Boston.
You should be able to feel that your heart rate is up. Keep in mind that a brisk walk for one person may be a stroll for another, she says.
Pace yourself. If you are just starting out with a walking program, you should try to work up to a pace of at least 3 mph, says Anne Lusk, a research associate at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Here's another way to look at it:
• Less than 3 mph is considered slow walking.
•More than 3 mph is considered brisk walking.
•More than 4 mph is considered very brisk walking.

She says to figure out your speed, count your steps per minute: 3 mph is about 120 steps a minute, while 4 mph is about 135 steps a minute.
Besides increasing your pace, you may also need to increase the number of steps you take.

Re: [fast5] Re: Couple of Questions need some ideas

Well, sounds like a good experiment! I can tell you from what I've read from various people posting, that you might not have to worry so much about "magic numbers" on Fast-5. Whatever the body is doing on this way of eating, it is different from the normal feeding algorithms in the books. Personally, when I'm "on a diet", my metabolism goes into a tailspin. On Fast-5, I actually eat quite a bit less, but my metabolism is doing fine, and I'm not hungry. Which doesn't make sense, except that I think I'm actually digesting food better, and insulin metabolism is different.

So anyway, your experience in the past might not hold true with this way of eating. If you read the archives, a lot of people do worry about the whole "starvation syndrome" thing because they appear to be eating too little, but this doesn't seem to cause a problem.

Oh I'm fat :) and trying to loose the weight. I am very muscular and actually large boned, but the weight I'm shooting for is the weight I was when I was 20% body fat, which was 125-130lbs.  Right now I'm at 143lbs.  I started out this year at 153lbs.   The last 5lbs I've lost in the last few weeks using Fast 5.  I'm really more going for fat loss not so much worrying about the physical body weight.  I gained a lot of fat between 2008 & 2010.  Unfortunately with a lot of viseral fat (fat inside the organs).  Which is what I'm currently loosing. Although I still have quite a few inches of reg fat to loose too.  That hasn't changed with the 5lbs I lost, but my stomach were the viseral fat pouch was has gone done significantly where I used to see my stomach pooch out is now an indent.

Anyway, the only reason I'm counting calories is because I need to loose weight/fat.  In the past when I wasn't eating enough I would stall on my weight loss, even when I wasn't hungry.  That magic caloric number was 1200 when I wasn't workign out and 1250-1400 when I was.  So I wanted to keep my caloric intake within that range, so I would continue to loose weight properly.

Once I acheive my goal weight, I won't worry about it as much because I do feel as long as you are eating a lot of fruits and veggies and getting proper nutrition the number doesn't necessarily matter as much.  1000 calories of doughnuts is not in anyway nutritionally the same as a meal that has a lot of veggies, fruit, and protien.
