All I know is some herbs are ok and some you just don't play around with when the brain is concerned. I had
read about Ginkgo and this was a super good one at that, and how it 'may help improve blood circulation in the
brain' ' containing phosphatidylserine (PS) (sp) which is clinically proven to help maintain memory. That is
all I had to see and thought I was off to the races. Thank God my Blood check up was coming shortly and I had
not taken many of these but both my family doctor and neurologist nearly had a 'bird' over I was told when
anything effects the blood circulation like that to make double sure you know what you are doing and ask
first.
One thing with herbs you can stop them almost immediately without any side effects.
They are a short for a short term benefit as in most cases there is just one ingredient in each given drug.
Taking one ingredient at a time is what messes some people up and gives them the reaction. If I can take
Calcium for an example: taking calcium by itself is where we run into trouble it needs a certain amount of
magnesium (usually half of the calcium mg), and another half of vitam D iu to distribute it properly
throughout the body. You should also look for a tiny mg of silicon in there too. This is the only way to get
a proper dose of your calcium. If you were to take magnesium by itself it would/might work for a while just
like a herb and then your body would say 'hey I need more of something here, this definitely isn't working or
doing it's job. Just like sometimes we not only have to take Tegretol but a certain amount of another drug in
order to balance the seizures out. One drug will help lower the number of seizures had and the other the
strength of them.
Take care and yes our brain does need food of some kind... question being can we get what we need per day when
the AEDs are taking it out faster than we can put in.
Keep smiling

Subject: [epilepsy] Re: use of herbs - Laura
If I was going to use herbs with my child, and they were also taking prescription medicines for their
condition - I would want to seek out a naturopathic physician that would team together with my child's doctor
or neurologist.
I think your doctors gave you good advice since seizures are a very tricky thing.
I am an adult, and very knowledgeble about herbs - and can tell what they are doing in my body. It is
different with a child.
But I also feel diet is extremely important and can have bad results if wrong foods are eaten. I don't know
how much conventional doctors understand the effects of food and the brain.
Good luck!
Love,
Jnanda
