[Prince-4ever] Re: [LoveSexyDC] Prince, Past, Present and Post-Midlife

Mmm, I can "partially co-sign" with you Dr. G. considering that all the albums before Parade Era had this FIRE and passion but "the kid" was in his early 20's and early 30's when he made the original purple funk.

My question to any and everyone is: with Prince being a JW and also 50 should we expect the same passion/fire from the earlier albums?

I think/feel P's cool with it now. I do not think he will. Unless he finds and meets a muse who can give him that inspiration. I believe it that he "wanted it" so bad that he was putting out that so said fire. Now, he's 50 yrs old and he's been there, done that. Nothing more to prove any longer. Then again all we have to do is go back in our purple funk archives and "feel" the music of the day. I am not expecting him to "bring it" like that anymore, it would be nice but I do not expect it.

I love Prince but I must also agree that Prince made most of his greatest music before 1999 (the year not the song). I love LOTUS, Musicology and many of his CDs in the 2000s but they do not compare to Controversy, Dirty Mind or even Purple Rain. Not even close. BUT, compared to today's sad music scene Prince is still #1, by far.

That's where my negativity comes from, I suppose. After being a fan since I was 8yrs old, I guess it is like an old marriage. Don't have the strength to leave, don't really have anyone comparable to cheat with (Michael Jackson - I don't think so), and yet I'm strangely comfortable in this miserable existence, although I hate the way it makes me keep coming back for more. Must be the music!

That's what being a Prince fan is to me at this stage in the game and maybe it will change - when I get a life (heh heh). Once he goes on tour and stops neglecting the East Coast, I'll be slightly more contented.

Dig?

SNIP

One night, as we Prince fans gathered at Chief Ike's and danced in the semi-darkness to Purple Tunes, I sat off to myself, enjoying a cocktail and singing along to the music. On this particular night, the DJ appeared to be spinning Prince's tunes in chronological order and as the night wore on, I merrily sang to my favorite tunes.

As the DJ crossed into the millineum music, another LoveSexyDC member (who shall remain nameless) approached me and playfull shook an admonishing finger in my face gingerly chiding me with "You stopped singing all the words to Prince's music that was released right around 2000. Why don't you know the words so well for the newer music? Did you give up or something?"

It was indeed a funny thing to say and we both had a good laugh about it but it did set my mind in motion about Prince's music and Sisterfate's posting stirred that up in me again.

People, Prince has changed in the last decade, or shall I say his music has changed. What drew me to Prince in the early 80s, when like Sisterfate I too was in elementary school, was everything about Prince, from his look (clothing and hair) to his sound and the lyrical content and structure of his music. There was a drawing power there that captivated me. I could listen to the music for hours on end and never get bored with it.

Even today when I listen to the earlier releases, although I know every bell and whistle that will eminate from the instruments and Prince's mouth, I still get such electric shocks down my spine - I could listen all day.

I do not feel that way about his later releases. Something has changed. I am sure it is probably my advancing age, and the fact that what was electrifying about Prince to me as a younger woman may no longer hold sway for me. At one time, he waved a freak flag for me to be prideful and gleeful through. Now, I can wave my own flag so perhaps he is not being as impressive for me as he once was.

Dont' get me wrong.. the man is still incredible in his talent. I just don't run to the store to buy his newer releases and listen to them ad nauseum until they are completely committed to my memory as I once did.

I bought LotusFlow3r and played it in my car. I watched the Tavis Smiley interviews and was happy to see Prince discuss his life and music. I started on the Bria CD and didn't finish it - I was just not that impressed.

I'm not sure what it is going to take to get Prince to once again create that incredible musical output that used to lead me out to school each day dancing on the tip of my toes, so happy that I had a Prince tune in my head. All these years later I'm still a fan, but I must say, I really enjoy is earlier offerings more so than some of the later stuff.

Just a thought....
