Phenobarbital was actually the first med that I was put on when I was diagnosed at around 6 years of age. My mother (who is a nurse) said that I was a zombie most of the time and that while the grand mals were mostly controlled, the smaller seizures weren't.
Later when my parents got out of the military, my pediatrician had his brother (a childrens neurologist) look at my records and said that Tegretol was a better bet. This was in the -very- early 80's so I personally don't know what was available back then.
I don't remember too much from back then (it's been 30 years now) but I do know that I was tired a lot. I also went from being a really active kid to being a total couch potato.
Hope that helps some.
