My 9 year old does that too and I think it is related to her sleep obstructive apnea. She went to Standford Sleep Center to try and find out if her night seizures were related to anything regarding sleep and she was a severe case of OSA. I think she pops awake because her brain tells her to wake up since she isn't breathing. The night of the testing she stopped breathing 8 times.
