Re: [epilepsy] New to group

Karen, when I was a child i had seizures like those. and I was told grand mals. I now have petite mals and partial complex. I have had seizures since i was 3 1/2 months old started as grand mals. spent most of my time in the hosp. I have seizures because I had a stroke during prenatal care or delivery. I am one of the lucky ones to know why I have seizures. But mine have never been under control.  Donna

Hi. Ok. I grew up with my mom having epilepsy. Initially it was apparently petit mal...she didn't have her first grand mal till I was 15 but this was back in the 50's and 60's so things were a bit different. After the fact I realized she was having the absent seizures for quite a while...just didn't know what they were.

So I'd seen grand mal ones many times. Years later when I remarried we had a son and he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. At one year old he had his first seizure. Several years later they were calling them grand mal even though they never saw him have one but to me they weren't like my moms. He had rhythmic (sp) jerking of all four limbs and in the end (usually up to 5 min) he would take a deep sigh and would grind his teeth or smack his lips....sometimes he would go to sleep for a short bit after. He hasn't had a seizure, that we know of, in about 4 or 5 years. There have been a couple of times in the past 7 or so months when he had moments where he seemed diconnected and then suddenly would "be there" and then smile. He has severe cerebral palsy and cannot talk so a lot of what we do in terms of him...he's 18, is guessing and trying to figure stuff out. A day or so ago I noticed his tongue was curled up and almost back on the roof of his
mouth...he had some secretions and I went to suction but couldn't get his tongue moved. Then at some point it relaxed. He did it again today...then a little while later while I was holding his head just after his dad had cathed him I realized his eyes were darting side to side rapidly and his head was also making little jerks side to side in my hands. It only lasted maybe a minute or so and then stopped. Then his eyes did it a couple of more times...then he was "back". I've never seen a seizure like this one and was wondering if anyone had or knew anything about it or what type it might be...I did some searching on line and found several sites where it mentioned the eyes but not the head doing the same thing.

Thank you
Karen
