Subject: [epilepsy] Re: Vimpat?
Andrea,
My neurologist place me on Vimpat 3 years ago when I began experiencing episodes of jamais vu. The dosage was low (200 mg daily). I had ben on the same dosage of Keppra, fwiw. It has worked fine for me but my episodes have been very well controlled for years.
Vimpat isn't all that new... it's been on the market for about 6-7 years.

I currently take 600 mg of carbamazepine twice a day and 1500 mg of Keppra twice a day. My doc has been pushing me for quite some time to go off the carbamazepine and try Vimpat instead. Several things worry me about making the change. First, it's new and EXPENSIVE. Second, it's new and the last time I tried something new it was withdrawn from the market without warning and while switching to something else, I ended up in the ER after a bad gran mal that caused a nasty head bump. Third, the doc seems a little overzealous about this drug, so I'm wondering if there's something in it for him that might be clouding his judgement on this. I have a few questions...

Hi Andrea,
My daughter took Vimpat for her epilepsy for about 6 months and I took her off of it because it was ineffective for her. She still had just as many seizures including cluster seizures as she did from her previos meds, but the biggest concern for me was the personality change that came with it. She started acting zombie like and her responses were very delayed. Lots of dizzines. Of course everyone is different and individual results can be different. Sometimes you just dont know until you try them. I would also try to google the medication and see if there are more extensive reviews.
