My understanding is that generics can also vary up to 10% in either direction in terms of the active drug. While this wouldn't make a huge difference for most conditions, it can well be the difference between having seizures and not having seizures or of having overdose symptoms. For example, Megan was on 4000 mg of Keppra. That would mean a generic could contain anywhere from 3600 mg to 4400 mg for the same dose as the brand name drug. Also, the uptake into the blood stream can be quite different for generics than their corresponding brand name drugs. Megan was on generic Lamictal for a very short time. It was going into her system more rapidly than the brand name drug, so she would have overdose symptoms in the morning and was also likely to have a seizure before it was even time for her evening dose.
