Re: [epilepsy] Genetic drug question

I have never had issues with generics. However, that does not mean they are the same!! Essentially, they are the same medication, BUT, the rate at which they dissolve in your blood system does not have to be the same. It can be slightly off--but if enough people do not have a problem with it, it's fine. Also, if the drug is coated, some people have reactions to the coating.

With generics, several companies can make them--and pharmacies can change vendors, so one month you may get your supply from one maker, the next month, another. I haven't had that problem, but it's worth noting.

From what I have found many generic drugs can be different than the lable. It just depends on the drug. It is probably a good idea no matter what anyone suggests to ask a pharmacist before making a final decision too.

They have to go through much more training and continuing education than doctors and may have access to recent documents and studies that haven't been widely posted yet.

Take care,

Christine

I take regular Lamictal and because of the monthly cost, I was
wondering how you might have done if you switched to the genetic
of this drug. I know a lot of doctors do not recommend this change
especially since I've been on this for ages. I almost think we
should all have stock in the drug market! Next July will be my
50th year of taking many different drugs for epilepsy. About 12
years ago, I had left temporal surgery, and it stopped all seizures
during the day, however I get them when asleep and I am still on
the drugs. If by chance you made the change to genetic of your
prescription, let me know how it goes. Thanks for your time.
