P's music and lyrical content was 'new' to me and I had never heard anything like him before. Hip Hop as we both know can get pretty 'gully' and 'grimy' but, P's lyrics I felt were never that much in your face back in the day. During the Tora Tora Era and or SLaVE Era he did get out the box and was cussin' a lot more.
We're talkin' about 'old school' Prince. He was one of the forerunners of the old style of Rock N' Funk. There weren't that many people doing what he was doing when he made Controversy or Dirty Mind and especially 1999. If anything I thought the Minneapolis Sound was groundbreaking.

U know what, my Purple brother? I feel that the legend's music was groundbreaking. Why? I think that from Dirty Mind 2 SOTT, he took the art 2 another level. It changed the face of music ever since. He raised the bar on songwriting, production, etc; His music has given birth 2 so many artists...even 2 this day. "When Doves Cry".....A #1 smash which had no bassline! I truly feel that his music broke ground & all of the earth!
